Julia Hanna’s lifelong philosophy has always been “Family is whoever sits around the dinner table.” This philosophy has set the tone for Julia’s culinary career.

Julia began her journey into the restaurant world at the age of 26 when she opened her first restaurant Café Galleria in Downtown Oakville. In 1993, Julia established Paradiso, which was the first Mediterranean inspired restaurant in Oakville. After selling Paradiso, Julia has developed Ristorante Julia in Downtown Oakville, which embodies her values that “one should never sacrifice taste for nutrition or nutrition for taste, one can have it all”. Julia’s features a blend of Italian and Latin cuisine called “Lataliano”. Her latest restaurant venture in North Oakville is Ritorno, which is a return to Julia’s Italian roots. Ritorno invites guests to bring photos of their mothers and grandmothers to place on the Nonna Wall, in celebration of these remarkable women.

Julia’s most passionate undertaking is her not-for-profit initiative, HealthyFam. In 2009, with founding partner Longo’s, Julia created The Kids Culinary Community, a hands-on program dedicated to empowering children through the knowledge of food. In 2013, she launched HealthyFam, which includes the Kids Culinary Community, the Family Culinary Community and the Seniors Culinary Community. HealthyFam teaches kitchen literacy where children, families and seniors build a foundation for healthy living. Julia received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal and Paul Harris Fellowship Award, in recognition of her commitment to healthy living in Canada.

Julia is an active board member of the Oakville Chamber of Commerce. She was elected Chair for 2012-2013.

Julia’s cooking show, “Return to the Table with Julia” on TV Cogeco is in its Sixth Season. The show features celebrities and  interesting guests who share their stories as they prepare a meal.  This season’s focus is on HealthyFam.

Julia’s monthly editorial feature with Metroland Media focuses on a healthy relationship with food with recipes that are nutritious and delicious.

Technology, where she teaches a post-graduate course in radio broadcasting.

As I look back over the years, it may seem like I led a great life but don’t let my resume fool you. There have been many trials, tribulations and moments filled with so much darkness and despair that I never thought I’d be able to recover. Nothing ever came easily for me.  It’s been a journey of push, shove and numerous disappointments.  But then, isn’t that life?  Do you know anyone who has sailed their way through the ups and downs of every day living without incurring some deep battle scars along the way?

A wise writer once said to look at your own life and “write about what you know”.  I know about change and the turning points in people’s lives.  Whether it’s bringing it upon yourself and changing your life or career, or having events thrust upon you like tragedy and death, I’m living proof that we can all get through the challenges of life and feel good again.  There are so many stories of inspiring change in the world and they need to be told.

My goal is to empower people with courage, motivation and confidence to make changes in their lives.  What we need is a little inspiration – from each other.  I call it “People Inspiring People” and we’ve created a forum and resource centre for you. Let’s learn from each other, share our stories and inspire everyone to live a life filled with passion and conviction.

Debra McLaughlin is the founder and managing partner at Strategic Inc. where she oversees a team of consultants providing consumer and market insights to a wide range of media clients.  These insights are used to develop business plans, establish consumer profiles for inventory valuation and complete economic impacts analysis for clients working in media.

As well as managing Strategic Inc., Debra has been the Senior Director of Research for CBC, a Vice President at Airtime Television Sales overseeing operations for the advertising sales and branding of over forty stations in Canada and the US.  Prior to this Debra worked at Numeris, the broadcast industries’ audience measurement firm, McCann Erickson advertising agency on accounts such as Coca Cola, Mr. Christie and Government of India, J. Walter Thompson on Warner Lambert and Labatt’s and as a consultant at  PriceWaterhouse Coopers, Coopers Lybrand and Nordicity.

Debra has her MBA from Queens University where she finished at the top of her class with a specialization in finance.  She completed a degree in Industrial Psychology at Carleton University and a college degree in business from Fanshawe College.  Her resume includes global work in Switzerland, China, Brazil and the US.

In 2013, she put her consulting work to the test by opening a new radio service in Markham, Ontario. 105.9 The Region launched in December and Debra has been the General Manager ever since. Determined to fight the trend of homogenization of Radio, 105.9 focuses on local first and is developing a brand that is the voice of York Region.

There was no escaping the three generations of construction blood that ran through her veins. Dev Ramsumair  has been a creative force within the International  Fashion and Entertainment Worlds for over 18 years.

His early beginnings began with the development of advertisements for Diesel “Successful Living “ campaign and the 2002 Lanvin and 2005 Dior Homme Campaign. He has also developed marketing initiatives for Kiehl’s, Chanel, YSL and the Tout Beau by Jean-Paul Gautier campaigns.

In 2006 Dev transitioned his firm to event production, handling such shows as New York Fashion Week, Toronto L’Oreal Fashion Week( bringing the MISSONI family 50 year Retrospective), Fashion Cares, Bloor Street Entertains and Miss Universe.

His most memorable moment was in the Launch of the Lumina-TO Festival with L’Oreal and $300 million dollar Reno of the Royal Ontario Museum Crystal. He has also worked with Alicia Keys and Whitney Houston. Dev continues to bring his strong sense of community and paying forward with his commitment to various social injustices around the globe.

John Cameron – A New Way of Networking 

JohnCameronJohn Cameron is the founder and CEO of The Networking Effect. After 15 years in the telecommunications industry in various executive and sales management roles, John moved into the world of small business. In 2005, he launched SuiteWorks Business Centre, the first of its kind in Central Ontario.

Through his experience at SuiteWorks, John discovered a gap in the small business community. There was no good way for small business people to network efficiently and conveniently within their busy schedules. The Networking Effect was conceived.
